Report writing skills for the security professional

Security reports are important to security departments as they provide a record of useful information. The efficiency of any security
unit as well as its effectiveness are directly linked to the quality of the reports that is written. What a security report contains and how it
is written are both very important. Accuracy and clarity are necessary in the content and form of any security report.


People do not enter into the Security and police professions to be writers. Yet, a persons total effort when responding to a situation is
summarized on a few sheets of paper—the incident report. The quality of this report can influence the success of the mission and,
many times may be used to help an experienced defense attorney decide whether to bring a case to trial. The quality of the report
also can help determine the effectiveness of the prosecuting attorney and always shows credibility of the reporting officer during a
court appearance. Written reports are the primary means of communication between the security professional, supervisor and client.
Professional well written reports show the client that they have hired a professional and the benefits are numerous for both the
security professional and the company that employ’s them.
